SellTo.us vs UserTesting: simulated reactions or real people on video?

Last verified: · SellTo.us Team

UserTesting and SellTo.us answer different questions. UserTesting shows you real people using your website, app or prototype while they think out loud. SellTo.us simulates how an audience might react to an idea before anything is built. Here’s an honest comparison, with prices checked on the official site.

The short answer

UserTesting records real people using your product and talking through what they see, with plans from $149 per session for individuals. SellTo.us simulates an audience’s reaction to an idea in minutes, from free, before you have a product. Use SellTo.us to choose what to build or say; use UserTesting to see how real people use what you’ve built.

What SellTo.us does

SellTo.us shows your idea to AI-simulated participants built from the audience you describe and reports how they react: who is interested, who isn’t, the reasons they give and what to check next. It works for startup ideas, apps, services, physical products, ads and prices. The participants are AI personas, not real people, and the results are simulated reactions, not survey data or sales forecasts. See the methodology for how participants are created, how answers are counted and the limits.

What UserTesting does

UserTesting is a platform for getting real user feedback on prototypes, websites and apps. Most tests are recorded videos of people using your product while saying what they think. It also supports live interviews, short tests, surveys and, on higher plans, card sorting and tree testing.

Its panel is real people. UserTesting calls it a contributor network of real users around the world, and its help center says it covers more than 60 countries.

The important difference: simulated vs. real people

This is the part that matters most. UserTesting collects answers from real people. SellTo.us generates answers from AI-simulated participants. Real people can surprise you, use their own experience and tell you things no description contains; their answers are evidence about real behavior and opinions, within the limits of the method. Simulated participants are faster and cheaper to run at scale, and they’re useful for screening and comparing options, but their answers are produced by an AI model from the description you gave. They show the kinds of reactions people like your audience might have, not what anyone actually thinks.

So the two are not substitutes. A sensible flow uses a simulated test to narrow down what to ask, then real people to check it.

Turnaround

UserTesting: Its help center says standard unmoderated tests often return results within the same day; its done-for-you studies deliver insights in about 2 weeks.

SellTo.us: A few minutes for the free snapshot; about 10 to 12 minutes for 1,000 participants, 14 to 16 for 10,000 and 22 to 28 for 100,000 (longer when the AI service is very busy).

Audience targeting and types of insights

UserTesting: Filters include age, gender, household income, country, employment status, industry, company size, job level and role, language, operating system and browser, plus screener questions.

Test types include recorded think-aloud tests, live conversations, short tests, surveys and, on higher plans, card sorting and tree testing, on desktop, tablet and mobile.

SellTo.us: Country, city and up to 10 audience groups described in your own words. The AI turns them into 8, 25 or 100 groups with ages, jobs, budget levels and habits. Interest by group, the reasons behind each answer, ranked objections, labeled simulated quotes, version comparisons, a decision brief and a PDF report.

Strengths and weaknesses

SellTo.us: strengths

  • Works before you have a product, a prototype or a website.
  • Minutes and a free first test.
  • Thousands of participants split into audience groups.
  • Compare up to 5 versions of an idea, price or ad.

SellTo.us: weaknesses

  • Participants are AI personas, not real people: no real opinions, behavior or follow-up questions.
  • No accuracy is claimed; results haven’t been measured against real sales.
  • Results depend on how clearly you describe the idea and the audience.
  • It can’t watch anyone use a product: it tests reactions to a description, not usability.

UserTesting: strengths

  • You see and hear real people using your product.
  • Finds usability problems no description would reveal.
  • Detailed targeting and screener questions.
  • Same-day results for standard tests, according to its help center.

UserTesting: weaknesses

  • Each session costs money ($149 on Starter, minimum 10 sessions).
  • Needs something to test: a site, app or prototype.
  • Small samples, so it shows problems rather than how common they are.

Which one to choose

SellTo.us is the better choice when…

  • You don’t have a product or prototype yet.
  • You want to compare ideas, prices or messages before building.
  • You want a first read across many audience groups today.
  • Your budget is small.

UserTesting is the better choice when…

  • You have a website, app or prototype and want to watch real people use it.
  • You need to find usability problems.
  • You want real people’s words and reactions on video.
  • Your team needs detailed screening of who takes part.

Many teams will want both at different moments: a simulated test to screen ideas and wording quickly, then real people before committing real money.

Questions

Does UserTesting use real people?

Yes. Its tests use real people from its contributor network.

Can SellTo.us test my website’s usability?

No. It tests how a simulated audience reacts to a description of an idea, offer or ad. Watching people use a product needs real participants.

Can I use both?

Yes. Use SellTo.us to choose which idea or message to build, then UserTesting to see how real people use what you built.
